Start Reading With T ~ Episode 04 ~ What should you read?

Hey guys! I hope you all are doing well. We have reached the Episode 4 of #StartReadingWithT, finally! Sorry for the delay and I would like to blame it on exams! I was extremely excited about presenting this episode ever since it came to my mind. I have heard at least 20s of people saying that they are too lazy to read. Those who try to start reading often end up not finding a book that is perfect for them.

Every person is different and so are their interests. I feel it will be very unfair to recommend certain books to a person who doesn’t read any unless I know them personally. So, in this article I mention some tips that will help you understand what kind of books should you pick up that will grab your attention like anything!

What kind of web series do you enjoy watching?

So basically, everyone has their own likes and dislikes. Take a moment and review what kind of movies and TV shows have you genuinely enjoyed watching in the past 6 months. Please do not include the ones that you have watched and completed just for the sake of matching up with the trends. Note down genre of the shows which gave you genuine rush and pleasure while watching. Books belonging to these genres are most probably going to excite you the most!

Celebrity crush or inspiration?

Okay, so we all have at least one famous personality that inspires us, right? Be it their journey to success or the field they work in, we have different reasons. List down people who inspire you and google books about them. I hope you will find books related to their life and it will definitely interest you. Take some tips from their journey and know about their personal life struggles also! Learn from it. Get more inspired.

For eg, I get so enchanted by Steven Frayne a.k.a. Dynamo. I googled and got to know that he has authored the book ‘Dynamo: Magician Impossible’ and I ordered it right away. And omg, his story was so so heart warming 🙂

Read book that is set in your country (or city!)

Now, this is no surprise that reading a book set in your country or city will definitely grab your attention. It is better if its set in your own city because more you sense the familiarity in a book, more will be your attentiveness. Usually beginner/non reader find it hard to get started with a book. Familiar places will make this process easier.

Read a book based upon your field of interest!

Not only non-fiction, but you may end up finding a fiction novel that revolves around/talk about your field of interest. If you genuinely are interested in a certain profession or field, picking up a book about it will help you get started with reading.

What phase of life are you currently in?

Okay, just think why do you love sharing memes? Why do they seem funny? Because they are relatable, right? If anything is not relatable, anyone will have a harder time getting into it (do not worry, it happens even with the most ardent reader!). So, it is better to start your reading journey with a book with characters that you find relatable. Are you an engineering student, or a new mom, or a new bride, or an entrepreneur, or a a person in mid-thirties? You can find numerous books with relatable characters and that will make sure you complete reading the book with full enthusiasm.

Do you have a short attention span?

In case you struggle with reading long novels, you better start off with poetry books, graphic novels, short story collection and then novellas! Now, keeping the above mentioned pointers in mind, select the perfect book for you in any of these four genre of books.

I hope that these tips will help you find a book that will drive you into reading more books and increase your love for it. I hope all my friends find out about at least one book that they end up reading. My major goal in this article was to give you little help in understanding what you want to read because no one knows you better than you, right?

This was the last episode in the series of #StartReadingWithT. I hope you all enjoyed this series and found it helpful. I tried to cover all the important points in these 4 episodes but if you think I forgot something, do comment it down. I will bring up book recommendations from next episode that will not be the part of series but maybe just another series.

Share it with your non reader friends and help them get started with reading!

Start Reading With T ~ Ep 03

Hey guys! Welcome back to the third episode of #StartReadingWithT. I hope you have already noted down the tips from previous episodes and started implementing it. In case, you missed out on previous episode, check this.

Moving forward, I have always been asked one question (by everyone, trust me) that ‘When do I read’ and ‘How do I get time to read‘. These two questions are mostly asked by my friends as we share the same load of work/studies but I do make time to read and that makes them wonder. Believe me, its no magic (neither do I have a Time-Turner)!

Identifying this as one of the major hurdle in getting started with reading, I have listed down 5 tips/tricks from my experience that you can use if you don’t get time to read (or think so!). So, without any further ado, let us get into it.

  1. Depending upon your routine, make sure to block time in your planner to read. Never jot down reading as an extra activity. Prioritize it and mark time for it.
  2. Check your Instagram daily activity. Make sure to log out of Instagram after using it for certain period of time. Sharing memes can be fun, but reading is more! Trust me on this.
  3. After studying for an hour or completing a certain task, we often reward ourselves with a phone break, right? Exchange that for reading break.
  4. You do not even know how much time you spend on mundane activities. There are times when your mind is not occupied but hands are. Audiobooks to the rescue. Listen to audiobook while doing activities as mundane as doing dishes or folding clothes!
  5. Keep your current read in front of you all the time (most probably on work desk). You never know when you get a 10 minute break from work and end up picking up the book and reading it.

These 5 tips may seem very basic to anyone but are super useful. Follow these tips with full devotion for 15 days and see changes yourself. It will definitely build reading habit for you and you won’t have excuses about time.

In case, they end up working for you, do not forget to share it on your social media and tag me @tlostinbooks and use #StartReadingWithT. Share it with your friends who are all up with excuses about lack of time.

Stay tuned for Episode 4 where I finally reveal the tips to choose the correct book for you, that will keep you hooked till the end!

What tips do you have for finding time to read? Do you find these valid?

Start Reading With T ~ Ep 02

Hey guys, thank you so much for your positive response on the first episode of #StartReadingWithT. I am so much motivated and excited. So, now as we know Why should you read, let us quickly move to the Episode 02 without any further ado.

  • I cannot read regularly.
  • I read a book once in a while but then get back to binge watching.
  • I cannot focus while reading … and so on.

These are some common complaints of my non-reader/beginner reader friends and I have identified not reading regularly as a major pothole. All this sum up to one major problem: How to read or Correct way of reading.

To be honest, there is no parametrized correct way of reading. Every reader is different and so are their ways. I am no expert but I would still like to mention a few tips, tricks and techniques which I have concluded from my experiences until now that will get you started with books and reading.

1. Follow bookish pages

You remember when you watch too many food vlogs, you get desperate to eat something good. Or if you see everyone talking about a particular show on Instagram, it intrigues you and you rush to watch it. Similarly if you follow book bloggers and bookish accounts on Instagram (bookstagram), you have more chances of reading consistently. If reading lengthy blogs on books does not grab your concentration, bookstagram is the better option for you to start with. Believe me, you will end up with so much motivation to read regularly. Reading will be much more colorful and fun with amazing posts of bookstagram on your feed daily.

2. Join bookclubs

There are many book clubs on Facebook and Instagram (many specifically for beginners) that provide you a prompt to read a book. That definitely instills a lot of interest to read and speak more about the book and helps you decide what books to pick up (which trust me, again is a big problem).

3. Buddy reads

You know how a movie becomes much more interesting and fun when you watch it with friends, right? Similarly, it is always better to read with friends, so yeah why don’t you create your own friends’ book club maybe. I swear you all will love to read it together.

4. Make a routine

Scientific researches prove that reading early in the morning gives you a head start for the day while reading before sleeping leads to a peaceful sleep. Everyone has their own preferences and routine so I won’t conclude anything. But make sure to set a time for yourself where all you do is read. Without getting distracted. Include it in your daily routine and read everyday without missing.

5. Set goals

Set reading goals for yourself everyday. You can start with 10 pages and increase 5 pages once in a while as you progress. Believe me, start with small and realistic goals and you will definitely feel good as you achieve them.

6. Reading format

If you are a beginner reader and find it difficult to concentrate on a book, I will suggest to start reading with paperback format. However, try all three formats: digital, audio and physical. Take free trials, experiment and decide what suits you. I will personally not suggest you to read in digital format, unless you have a Kindle, lest you get distracted by other apps on the phone.

8. Make yourself a reading nook

Reading nooks create a motivating vibe to read for sure. It can be as simple as an old, comfortable chair in your balcony, green plants around with cold coffee/hot cup of tea or may be just your bed in a cozy quilt and with some snacks. When you associate a nook with an activity, the aura of it urges you to do the activity more often and comfortably.

9. D.E.A.R.

Drop everything and read (D.E.A.R.) is an initiative by Aanachal a.k.a. @libroreview. Particpants drop everything and read for 15 minutes straight twice a day (there are two slots and you can select one according to your routine). It can be of great help if you think you’ve got no time to read. Check more details here.

I am sorry for the delay in this post but it was a busy+lazy week. I hope that these ideas help you read consistently. If you like the post, do not forget to share it on your social media tagging me and using #StartReadingWithT. So, now more excuses and let us start reading!

Also, a special shout out to my awesome friend Prachi a.k.a. @scribbling.symphony for proofreading my content and always being there for me. In case you guys like reading poetry (available in both English and Hindi language), check her out.

Comment what topic do you want to see next in the series? Honest feedback and suggestions are always welcome.

Start reading with T ~ Ep 01

Hey guys! I have seen many people who want to read but they do not how to begin. Many of my friends have shown interest in reading but they are very irregular with it. Therefore, I thought to start this series, #StartReadingWithT, for every non-reader and beginner out there who want any sort of help with becoming a regular reader.

This series will consist of primarily 4 episodes related to this topic, and after that will come a book recommendation series. I have planned the layout but obviously, I can include more episodes if you guys want them. Let us dive straight into today’s topic:

Why should you read?

I believe that we humans do not like to do anything, out of our small comfort zone, unless our brain is convinced of the importance and benefit of it. I do not think that you will get into a habit of reading regularly just because I advice you to do so. Reasons work as a driving force and therefore, I wanted ‘Episode 1 of Start Reading With T’ to answer the question: Why should you read?

  1. Reading increases your knowledge immensely. Obviously, non-fiction books are mostly very much helpful and full of knowledge. But even fiction books do not lack it. When you read several books based in different settings and exploring characters, you get a lot of lessons to take away.
  2. World is a big place and we can not experience every thing in just one life. Books take you through places, make you meet vast array of people and lets you have experiences that you may miss otherwise.
  3. When you see the world from eyes of some one else (and when you read many books you most probably end up seeing it from so many extremely different people), your perspective widens. You become much more understanding and empathetic, which I think is a major part of good relationships.
  4. Reading books increases your power of imagination, memory and creativity. Remember when you read a character description in a book, how your brain actively tries to imagine them. Be it a person, place or even a dress, you are bound to let your imagination work for you. Since, your brain works super actively while reading, it helps in increasing focus, memory and brain power.
  5. Reading builds your vocabulary, which is of great benefit. It helps you in developing soft skills, find new words, explain yourself better and hence communicate effectively. It is no new fact that effective communication is one of the most important skills to have in the modern scenario.
  6. It is well-known that no two readers read same book. Scientific studies show that reading helps in reducing stress. No matter what you want (be it exploring reality, exploring yourself, escaping reality or just fun), books always provide solace and helps you relieve stress.

Now, as you know WHY SHOULD YOU READ, I hope you all will keep it in mind whenever you think to not read a book today. Reading is important and reading regularly is more important. I am sure that these reasons will make sure that you do not ditch reading even for a day.

Stay tuned for the Episode 2 of ‘Start Reading With T’ in which we will explore another major question and its answer. Share this with all of your family and non-reader friends, whom you are tired of convincing to read! I relate with you.

Tag me @tlostinbooks on Instagram and Twitter, if you share the post and do not forget to use the tag #StartReadingWithT. I hope you find this helpful.

MID-YEAR BOOK FREAK OUT TAG

Hey guys! We are halfway through the July! Sometimes, this year flies like anything and sometimes it all feels too slow! Its been a bad year but hey, its been amazing for me, reading-wise. I remember when the year started, I hardly got any time to read due to too many reasons. Major one being college activities. I have read all that I can manage (while balancing academics) in past 4 months that I have been home!

I am glad that Sujata a.k.a. @booksnbutterflies_ tagged me to do this amazing tag. Lets move forward and have a look upon my mid year book freak out tag!

~ BEST BOOK YOU HAVE READ SO FAR IN 2020 ~

I ended up reading many good books this year but THE KITE RUNNER BY KHALED HOSSEINI has occupied a special place in my heart, just like A THOUSAND SPLENDID SUNS. I felt so many emotions while reading it and oh my god, please read it! Know more about the book here.

~ BEST SEQUEL YOU HAVE READ SO FAR THIS YEAR ~

Not gonna lie, I do not really own many book series so yeah I did not really read any series/sequels this year. I love the first two books of Kalki Trilogy by Kevin Missal and I am sure that if I had read final book so far the answer would have been it only. So yeah, I guess I will be able to answer it by the end of the year!

~ NEW RELEASE THAT YOU HAVE NOT READ YET BUT REALLY WANT TO ~

THE BLACK FLAMINGO BY DEAN ATTA is one of my most anticipated release. First of all, look how gorgeous the cover is. It is pretty expensive, to be honest, so I am participating in every possible giveaway. Just pray for me, that I end up owning, reading and loving it.

THE BLACK FLAMINGO

~ MOST ANTICIPATED RELEASE FOR THE SECOND HALF OF THE YEAR ~

I am so happy that I got approved for the NetGalley eARC of ‘THE LOST WONDERLAND DIARIES’ by J. SCOTT SAVAGE. It is all set to release on 8th of September. It is a children’s fiction and I am more than excited to get lost in this wonderland!

COVER: THE LOST WONDERLAND DIARIES

~ BIGGEST DISSAPOINTMENT OF THE YEAR ~

Hands down, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child. My fellow potterhead, don’t read it. I don’t wish to say much about it because I have a full blog post on 10 MAJOR PROBLEMS WITH THE HARRY POTTER AND THE CURSED CHILD. It is full of spoilers. So, in case you still want to read the book, you are more than welcome to check my Instagram spoiler free post on the same topic!

COVER: HARRY POTTER AND THE CURSED CHILD

~ THE BIGGEST SURPRISE OF THE YEAR SO FAR ~

I read a lot of amazing books but somewhere, I had expected them to be amazing. One book that was one of the most important reads of the year, unexpectedly, was ‘ DEAR PEOPLE, WITH LOVE AND CARE, YOUR DOCTORS by Dr. DEBRAJ SHOME AND Dr. APARNA GOVIL BHASKER’. I genuinely feel that it is an important book because it left on impact on my percpetions towards doctors and medical field. If you want to know more about the book, here is my full review.

DEAR PEOPLE COVER

~ FAVORITE NEW AUTHOR ( DEBUT OR NEW TO YOU) ~

CHITRA BANERJEE DIVAKARUNI. She has got such a beautiful writing style and I fell in love with it as soon as I started reading The Palace of Illusions, which turned out to be my favorite as well. I am so sad that I left my hardback copy of The Forest of Enchantments back at the hostel.

AUTHOR CHITRA BANERJEE DIVAKARUNI

~ NEWEST FICTIONAL CRUSH ~

Okay, so he is not new but since I re read the book this year, I am considering the answer. Tariq from A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini. I mean what is there to not adore about him? Oh god, what a man. Tell me know in the comments if you also like him!

~ NEWEST FAVORITE CHARACTER ~

It has to be hands down, Panchali a.k.a. Draupadi from The Palace of Illusions by Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni. She has got such an awesome blend of fierceness and wit and charm and beauty and what not. I totally love her!

~ A BOOK THAT MADE YOU HAPPY AND A BOOK THAT MADE YOU CRY ~

A book that made me happy was I OWE YOU ONE by SOPHIE KINSELLA. It had perfect blend of humour, romance and emotions. It was my first read by the author and I am looking forward to read more titles by her.

The book that made me cry was again THE KITE RUNNER by Khaled Hosseini! I think I have said enough about it on Instagram. I am planning to write a blog post on why you should read the author soon, what say?

~ THE MOST BEAUTIFUL BOOK THAT YOU HAVE BOUGHT/ RECEIVED THIS YEAR ~

I was gifted the FingerPrint Classics edition of THE LITTLE PRINCE by ANTOINE DE SAINT EXPUREY by my friends this birthday and look at the freaking cover. It is so beautiful. Believe me the picture does no justice to the real cover.

~ WHAT BOOK DO YOU NEED TO READ BY THE END OF THIS YEAR ~

Honestly, there are so many books that I want to read this year but one book that I freaking need to read is MIDNIGHT’s CHILDREN BY SALMAN RUSHDIE. This book has been on my shelf for around 18 months now and believe me its thickness intimidates me. I really hope, wish and want to read this book now.

Okay, so that is it for the tag and I hope I did not bore you guys with it! I tag Ankita a.k.a. @ordoabchao_blog to take up this challenge. Feel free to consider yourself tagged if you wish to take it up.

Stay tuned for more fun tags!

PS: I am planning to start a series on reading, reviewing and recommending books. How does it sound to you? Any ideas! Do ping me if you are up for collaboration.

10 MAJOR PROBLEMS WITH THE HARRY POTTER AND THE CURSED CHILD

Hello friends! So, as the title suggests you all are going to know about my disappointment. With Reasons. Rant Review? Yeah, something of that sort only. I started reading Harry Potter Series 2 years back and I fell in love with the Potter World. Obviously, it is beautiful, right? No doubt about that. But the main and the biggest problem started after finishing the series.

I knew very well that ‘Harry Potter and The Cursed Child’ has disappointed a lot of Potterheads but curse my curiosity, I ended up reading it. And damn, it was full of problems and loopholes and worst things. Seriously, I tried to list down good things about the book, and I found none.

PS: THIS BLOG IS FULL OF SPOILERS! IN CASE YOU WANT A SPOILER FREE POST, CHECK OUT MY FOLLOWING INSTAGRAM POST: https://www.instagram.com/p/CCdeCn1gg3X/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link

LET US DIVE STRAIGHT INTO THE 10 MAJOR PROBLEMS WITH HP & THE CURSED CHILD:

1/10

MESSING UP WITH HARRY’S CHARACTER

Okay. Okay. This is frustrating. We have seen Harry growing from a kid to a warrior. We have spent 7 years together in Hogwarts, feeling everything that he felt, fighting the battle alongside him. One thing that we certainly know is that HARRY UNDERSTANDS THE IMPORTANCE OF A FAMILY. If you are going to tell me that he gets annoyed by his teenage son and not really tries to understand him, sorry, I am not going to take that shit. We know Harry cannot just blurt “I hope you were not my son” to Albus, so, please! Harry can not behave in such an irrational manner.

2/10

PORTRAYING RON LIKE HIS MOVIE CHARACTER

For those, who have read books know that movies have done the biggest injustice with Ron’s character. I mean come on, Ron Weasley is not as intelligent as Hermione Granger but he is not dumb. Ron is smart and fun and adorable. BUT WAIT, in original books. In this book, suddenly Ron turns into a stupid, dumb person who contributes nothing to the story and seems to be just joking around. Argh, no, no, that is not our Ron.

3/10

CEDRIC BECOMES A DEATH EATER?

We have way too many proofs from the series that Cedric was a very humble, friendly, loyal, and a perfect Hufflepuff. How can just make up that Cedric turns into a Death Eater just because he was humiliated during a task of the Triwizard Championship? Not happening.

4/10

TIME TURNER RULES THROWN OUT OF THE WINDOW

We all remember Hermione using Time Turner in the Harry Potter and Prisoner of Azkaban. We were made aware of many rules related to Time Turner like whatever happens during the time travel has already happened/happening in the present. But then, Albus Potter and Scorpius Malfoy do so many things using time turner which do not have any explanation concerning just said rule. It is really weird how their time turner can go back to literally more than 35 years back!!

5/10

POTION BREWING GONE ALL WRONG

Again, our intelligent Hermione had brewed the Polyjuice Potion in the Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets and it took her approximately one month to make it. How the hell do Albus and Severus make it within a couple of hours?? Is there any ultimate advancement in potion making? I do not think so because he used same ingredients as Hermione.

6/10

VILLAIN SUCKED!

Delphini Diggory or the daughter of Lord Voldemort and Bellatrix Lestrange (let us not even get into that!) is the supposed villain of the book. I mean she is spineless. Her character has got no strength and is dimensionless. She is like an unnecessary character being forced to act as the villain. It is such a bad idea for bringing Lord Voldemort back to power.

7/10

NOTHING ORIGINAL TO THE STORY

There is no new plot to the story. I mean Albus and Scorpius could have done so many amazing things or mischievous activities together but all that the play writer could think of was them interfering with what happened 30 years ago!? Like, seriously? There was a lot of scope for new adventures and fun but they dragged the same old story. Wow.

8/10

WHERE DID THIS NEW PROPHECY CAME FROM?

When the first prophecy around Harry and Voldemort was said, there was a complete explanation of who said it, who heard it and where was it stored. This new prophecy comes out of nowhere and the writers thought of not even giving an explanation. Wow, again.

9/10

WHERE ARE OTHER CHILDREN OF HARRY DURING THE FIASCO?

Harry, Ginny, Ron and Hermione keep visiting Hogwarts every now and then but they do not meet either James or Lily. There is not a single mention of conversation between the siblings and parents about the whole fiasco. No letter, no owl and no meeting. I mean come on Albus is missing from Hogwarts and wont it have been sensible for James or Lily to send one letter to their parents talking about it?

10/10

Where is Teddy Lupin?

We all know Harry Potter was named as the godfather of Teddy. I mean, since Remus Lupin and Nymphadora Tonks were no side characters and Teddy is freaking important. Why is his name not even mentioned in the whole play? Why god, why?

I can literally go on venting out my frustration and pointing out problems in this book but I just hope that these many are enough for you to not read the book. Also, J. K. Rowling is a TERF so come on, let us not put money in her pocket for this shit, at least!

DO LET ME KNOW IF YOU HAVE READ THE BOOK AND DO MY THOUGHTS ALSO RESONATE WITH YOU?
